Lexapro  

Lexapro is a selective serotonin uptake inhibitor (SSRI) available by prescription only. Lexapro has been proven to be effective and safe for the acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in children and adults ages 12-17. Lexapro has also been proven to be safe and effective in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.  Lexapro is believed to work by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical (neurotransmitter) in the brain that is involved in affecting the mood of the individual. Imbalances in these chemicals has been linked to depression and anxiety.

It is believed that Lexapro and other SSRI’s work to increase serotonin levels by inhibiting the re-absorption of serotonin in the brain. Studies have found that anti-depressants may increase suicidal thoughts in children, adolescents and young adults. These risks were not apparent in patients over the age of 24 when compared to placebos. Those close to the patient should be on the lookout for new or worsening symptoms. Some of the symptoms are, but not limited to, increased irritability, trouble sleeping, negative or unacceptable changes in behavior, aggressiveness or anxiety.

Lexapro is not for patients experiencing the following conditions: Epileptic seizures, manic episodes,having had a recent heart attack and/or heart condition and/or kidney problems. All patients should discuss any and all conditions with their physician prior to starting Lexapro.

Lexapro is available in tablet form as well as an oral solution. Tablets are round, film coated and available in 5, 10 and 20 mg doses. Lexapro oral solution is available in 1 mg/ml escitalopram base. There have been reports of overdoses involving Lexapro of up to 600 mg. Lexapro overdoses have been reported in doses of 1000 mgs. Reports of fatalities involving Lexapro or other SSRI overdose have been rarely reported.
